Quick overview

Understanding NZ services & resources

Care rarely comes from one place. Between government services, charitable organisations, community groups and specialist support networks, most families end up dealing with several different organisations — often without knowing where to start.

This category brings together the New Zealand-specific services worth knowing about, organised by what they help with: assessments and funding, condition-specific support, equipment and mobility, and general community organisations for older people.

Below you’ll find where to start, all of our guides to NZ services, answers to common questions, and a directory of trusted organisations.

Common questions

Questions families ask NZ Services & Resources

Short answers to the things we are asked most, with links to the full guidance where it helps.

What is a NASC and why does it matter?

NASC stands for Needs Assessment and Service Coordination. It’s the organisation responsible for assessing what funded support someone is eligible for, and is usually the first formal step toward publicly funded care.

Age Concern focuses on older people directly — safety, social connection, elder abuse prevention — while Carers NZ focuses specifically on supporting the family members doing the caring.

Several organisations offer short and long-term equipment hire; a needs assessment can also identify what’s eligible for funded loan equipment.

Yes — organisations like Dementia New Zealand and Parkinson’s New Zealand offer condition-specific information, local support groups and specialist advice.

Not one single source, but directories like Eldernet come close for providers, while NASC is the right starting point for anything involving funded assessment.

Your GP, a hospital social worker, or your local NASC are all reasonable starting points — they can point you toward the right service even if they’re not the right one themselves.
