Step in Comfort: How The Shoe Room and Home Carers Support Older New Zealanders’ Mobility and Confidence

.

Comfortable, supportive shoes can make all the difference for older adults. Whether it’s walking to the letterbox, shopping for groceries, or enjoying time with family, every step depends on balance, comfort, and the right fit. Yet, finding shoes that feel good and support ageing feet isn’t always easy — especially when mobility or health issues are involved.

That’s why The Shoe Room exists. This Christchurch-based specialist footwear store understands that healthy feet start with the right shoes. Their carefully curated range and expert fitting service help people of all ages (especially older adults) to find footwear that supports comfort and confidence.

At Home Carers, we share the same goal: helping older New Zealanders stay active, independent, and happy at home. Together, The Shoe Room and Home Carers make it easier for families to support mobility, prevent falls, and ensure every step is taken with care.

About The Shoe Room

After 30 years practicing as a Podiatrist Charlotte has seen almost every foot type and footwear style come through her door. Many of her clients had the same complaint…that they could never find a comfortable shoe that also looked great!! Charlotte realised that there was a huge demand for Functional Fashionable Footwear, and this led to the birth of The Shoe Room at Feet First Podiatry.

The Shoe Room was literally that, a small room housing a selection of shoes with features like extra depth, extra width and additional cushioning and support but also providing some style and colour.

Over the past years Charlotte has worked to develop relationships with suppliers and brands to create a footwear store that caters to a variety of clients, from those with underlying medical conditions like diabetes and arthritis to those who are on their feet all day with their work and those clients who have to accommodate orthotics in their shoes.  Now located in Waterman Place in Ferrymead

How The Shoe Room Supports Older People

As we age, our feet naturally change — arches flatten, skin thins, and balance can become more delicate. Shoes that once fit perfectly may suddenly cause discomfort or even contribute to falls. The Shoe Room helps older customers and their families find footwear that keeps them steady, supported, and comfortable every day.

Their expert team offers:

  • Professional fitting and measurement to ensure the perfect fit
  • Podiatrist-approved footwear designed for comfort and support
  • Stylish, functional designs for everyday wear or special occasions
  • Personal guidance to match shoes with specific foot conditions

The Shoe Room’s mission is to make good foot health accessible and enjoyable — proving that comfort and confidence can go hand in hand. Their team’s care, knowledge, and enthusiasm turn shoe shopping into a positive, empowering experience for every customer.
