Connection, Community, and Care: How Sumner Bays Union Trust and Home Carers Support Older People Every Day

.

Every neighbourhood has its quiet heroes — the people who check in on others, organise gatherings, help build friendships, and make sure no one slips through the cracks. For many older adults, these connections become a lifeline. A friendly knock on the door, a ride to a community event, or a familiar face at a monthly gathering can transform an ordinary day into something meaningful.

But as families become busier, and as mobility or health changes, it can be harder for older people to stay socially connected. Loneliness grows quietly. Even confident, capable individuals can begin to feel isolated.

At Home Carers, we understand that wellbeing isn’t just about practical support — it’s also about connection, purpose, and community. That’s why we’re proud to feature Sumner Bays Union Trust. This community-led organisation is dedicated to supporting older people in the Sumner, Redcliffs, Ferrymead, and Heathcote areas. Their Older Persons Programme provides companionship, outings, advocacy, and meaningful social opportunities. These help older adults stay engaged and supported in their local community.

The Sumner Bays Union Trust, established in 2008 by the Redcliffs Union Church, is a registered charitable trust. It supports and coordinates community programmes across Sumner, Redcliffs, and the wider bays. The Trust is membership-driven, with volunteers forming the heart of each group they support. From community gardens and orchards to preschool playgroups, cultural initiatives, and the well-established Older Persons Programme, volunteers are crucial.

The Trust provides essential leadership and administrative support including funding applications, health and safety oversight, insurance, financial management, and liaison with council and community partners. Over the years, it has grown into a vibrant community organisation that strengthens local resilience and connection.

How Sumner Bays Union Trust Supports Older People

The Older Persons Programme is the Trust’s largest and most impactful initiative. It is led by Older Persons Coordinator Barbara Lightfoot. With a caseload of up to 30 clients at any one time, Barbara plays a vital role. She is supported by volunteers and ongoing professional supervision and helps older adults stay active, connected, and well.

The programme offers:

  • One-to-one support for older people living alone or experiencing social isolation
  • Outings and social events, providing fun, friendship, and a sense of belonging
  • Hospitality and community connection for those who may feel disconnected or lonely
  • Liaison with health organisations, ensuring older people get timely support
  • Monthly Happy Hour gatherings at Redcliffs Union Church, complete with finger food and warm company
  • Volunteer engagement, creating meaningful relationships across the community

Through this programme, the Trust helps older residents remain part of the community they know and love.

How Home Carers Complements Their Work

While Sumner Bays Union Trust provides community connection, social opportunities, and local support, Home Carers complements this by offering personalised, in-home care that supports older adults with their day-to-day wellbeing.

Our carers can help with gentle companionship before and after outings. They can assist with transport and mobility needs and provide daily check-ins for safety and comfort. Clients who need extra help around the home can also receive support. Additionally, carers can notice changes in mood, mobility, or health. They encourage early support from health providers, including the Trust’s Older Persons Coordinator where appropriate. Together, these services create a strong network of care around each client.

Side by side, Home Carers and Sumner Bays Union Trust help older adults stay engaged, independent, and deeply connected to their community.
